M.E. Murphey
Artist Statement

My work explores the realm of human experience. My art is how I dialogue about my own life, and my perceptions of this state of being human.  I strive to face the canvas, or paper, each day with honesty, integrity, and fearlessness.

As a highly imaginative personality, I rely more on images from my mind, than life or photographs.  Although the sources (and faces) for my work may not exist in the physical world, they exist within me, and they help aid me as I explore life.  They are my way of figuratively expressing my experience.

Among my influences and inspiration are, Hokusai, Van Gogh, Kathe Kollwitz, Betty LaDuke, and the writings of William Buttler Yeats, and T.S. Elliot.

My longtime involvement in martial arts has led to a great appreciation of the physical form and anatomy, and my studies into Buddhism have led to a great exploration of the workings of the mind. All are very important to my work.

“And the end of all our exploring
will be to arrive where we started
and know the place for the first time.”
               T.S. Eliot
